The Opportunity

A global media campaign, built to
bring the world to NZ.

Secrets the River Keeps is a global media and travel campaign — a feature documentary, an international film tour, in-flight placement, and a coordinated press push — built to drive high-end, high-intent travel tourism to New Zealand.

Made in partnership with leading outdoor brands and Air New Zealand, and filmed across Lake Taupō and its tributaries, the film follows anglers April Vokey and Simon Jolly alongside the guides, iwi members, and historians who know this country best. It's more than a film — it's an invitation to the other New Zealand.

The Audience

Fly fishing has outgrown its own stereotype.

This is no longer a niche pastime for an older generation — it's increasingly embraced by younger, adventurous crossover travelers (skiers, snowboarders, bikers, trekkers) alongside affluent travelers seeking luxury lodges, fine dining, and iconic landscapes. Even non-anglers respond to the art and story of it, making this a powerful entry point for a broad audience.

01
Wealthy Traveling Anglers

High-net-worth anglers who have always dreamed of fishing New Zealand.

02
Returning Anglers, North Island Untapped

Anglers who've fished the South Island but never made it north — Taupō is a new chapter of a trip they already love.

03
Emerging & Aspiring Anglers

A new generation entering the sport on the back of Yellowstone and The Madison, searching for their first great destination.

04
Outdoor Crossover Enthusiasts

Skiers, snowboarders, mountain bikers, and trekkers who increasingly pack a rod alongside the rest of their gear.

05
Non-Anglers Drawn to the Lifestyle

Hikers and culture-seekers who don't fish at all — but respond to the landscapes and story the film puts on screen.

Theatrical & In-Flight

250+ cities across 5 continents on the Fly Fishing Film Tour, plus Air New Zealand in-flight entertainment reaching travelers already dreaming of their next destination.

Digital & Owned Channels

Field & Stream TV (an estimated 80–100 million households), plus YouTube, email, and landing pages building a warm audience ahead of premiere.

The PR Machine

The same press infrastructure that landed five major magazine features and a cover story last time — built to get this campaign everywhere anglers look.

Plus — The Giveaway

A headline trip-for-two to New Zealand, built with our brand partners — flights via Air New Zealand, lodging & guiding via Chris Jolly Outdoors and Love Taupō — put in front of anglers to drive engagement across the campaign.

Why Now

Fly fishing is having its moment again.

Fly fishing's cultural moment is back — bigger and more ready to travel than the River Runs Through It era.

Streaming & TV

Yellowstone & The Madison

Yellowstone and Paramount's The Madison have put fly fishing and the Western outdoor lifestyle back in front of tens of millions of viewers.

Recreational Gold

The World's Best Trout Water

Serious anglers already rank New Zealand's rivers among the finest sight-fishing on earth. This campaign plants the flag — and claims that title, loudly, before anyone else does.

Consumer Behavior

High-Intent, High-Spend Travelers

Fly anglers are high-income, high-length-of-stay travelers who book guides, lodges, and multi-week itineraries — exactly who NZ tourism wants.

Confirmed Partners

The campaign already has real weight behind it.

Secrets the River Keeps enters this partnership with major brand and destination support already committed.

Proof of Work

We've put destinations on the map before.

Off the Grid Studios doesn't pitch theory — here's what this team has delivered for tourism partners before.

Jungle Angler
Category Creation · South America

More than a decade ago, Off the Grid Studios created an entire category. Jungle Angler was the first film of its kind to put jungle fly fishing on the world map — shot in one week, producing a festival entry and a full season of social content that's kept the category growing for 10+ years.

Featured — Fly Fisherman Magazine
Dubai on the Fly
Destination Campaign · Dubai Tourism

Hired directly by Dubai Tourism, Dubai on the Fly became the most comprehensive media campaign ever built for a new fly fishing destination — an officially selected Fly Fishing Film Tour title playing ~170 cities, five major magazine features including a cover in This is Fly, a long-form Amazon release, and a destination sweepstakes.

Who We Are

An Emmy-nominated team — with New Zealand already in our blood.

Off the Grid Studios is an Emmy-nominated production team with 25 years of award-winning work across film, television, and branded media — filming on every continent and building real relationships with the guides, lodges, and destinations who make each story true.

We've spent two and a half decades learning how to do two things at once: capture media good enough to win festivals and awards, and get that media in front of the exact audience a destination is trying to reach.

And a personal note: New Zealand is already part of our team. Our head writer lives in New Zealand, and our founder's own household is half Kiwi — this isn't a project we're parachuting into. It's one we've been living toward for years.
